In the main event, current Featherweight champion Volkanovski (25-2-0) makes his fifth title defense against the interim champ, Rodriguez (16-3-0, 1 NC). It’s a huge opportunity for the former TUF Latin America winner and Mexican-born fighter to dethrone one of the best fighters in the world, and unify the Featherweight belt.
Volkanovski is coming off his first UFC loss to Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 284, but he is undefeated in the Featherweight division. He doesn’t think he can lose the fight, but he’s still wary of his rising-star opponent.
“He’s got that danger element,” the Australian champ told MMA Fighting. “The way I lose to anyone in my division is that someone landing a lucky punch, catching me.”
In the co-main event, Brandon Moreno defends his Flyweight title against Alexandre Pantoja, who holds two past wins over the champ. The event also includes former champion Robert Whittaker facing Dricus Du Plessis, and Bo Nickal’s return against Val Woodburn.

UFC 290 serves as the anchor for this year's International Fight Week. The summer spectacular is headlined by a title unifier between Alexander Volkanovski and Yair Rodriguez, the UFC featherweight and interim champion, respectively. It all goes down inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Volkanovski is considered by many the best active pound-for-pound fighter in the world. It's a conversation he's in with the likes of heavyweight champ Jon Jones and lightweight champ Islam Makhachev. Volkanovski returns to defend his featherweight throne after making a strong account of himself up a weight class in a loss to Makhachev. Awaiting to challenge Volkanovski's rule is Rodriguez, a dynamic striker who finished Josh Emmett to earn his place at the top.
Saturday's co-main event is another title tilt. Flyweight champ Brandon Moreno emerged victorious in a historic quadrilogy against Deiveson Figueiredo only to meet another familiar foe. Alexandre Pantoja has two prior victories over Moreno: one professional UFC fight and an exhibition bout on "The Ultimate Fighter." Both fighters have matured drastically since. Moreno is the betting favorite, but can he finally overcome Pantoja?
Other fighters to keep an eye on include standout collegiate wrestler Bo Nickal, former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and retiring former UFC welterweight champ Robbie Lawler.
A championship doubleheader is set for Saturday's UFC 290 with both the featherweight and flyweight titles on the line. In the night's main event, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski will battle interim champ Yair Rodriguez in a bout to unify their titles.
The co-main event sees Brandon Moreno defending his flyweight title against Alexandre Pantoja. The Brazilian holds a past win over Moreno, adding intrigue to what should be an exciting battle between two talented, well-rounded fighters.
The card caps off the UFC's annual "International Fight Week," which features other events such as the Hall of Fame induction. The IFW cards are always stacked with big names and this year is no different with other big names such as Robert Whittaker, Dan Hooker, Robbie Lawler and blue chip prospect Bo Nickal.
Alexander Volkanovski defends his UFC men's featherweight title tonight.
UFC Featherweight title holder Alexander Volkanovski will hope to defend his championship status when he takes on Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290 tonight.
Volkanovski is coming off the back of a defeat via unanimous decision to Islam Makhachev earlier in 2023.
The Australian fell short in his efforts to become the UFC champ-champ and will now take on interim featherweight champion Rodriguez.
Also on tonight's card, Brandon Moreno will attempt to retain his flyweight title when he comes up against Alexandre Pantoja, while Robert Whittaker faces Dricus du Plessis.
Volkanovski dominates fighters with his low-leg kick that cuts off his opponent’s mobility while managing distance at an elite rate and grappling when needed.
Most of the grappling exchanges should be won by Volkanovski, but when the two stand and trade strikes, Rodriguez will prove himself game while staying unafraid throughout.
