The Australian is defending his 145lbs title for the fifth time, having fought for the lightweight title in his last outing.

Volkanovski lost to 155lbs champion Islam Makhachev earlier this year in a valiant effort.

But now he'll move back down in weight to defend the belt he won from Max Holloway in 2019.

His opponent Rodriguez won the interim featherweight title against Josh Emmett in February.

Rodriguez is a UFC veteran but has never won a full world title in his nine years with the company.

Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski will defend his title against Yair Rodriguez at a blockbuster UFC 290 tonight.

Volkanovski is aiming to get back to winning ways following defeat by unanimous decision to Islam Makhachev earlier this year.

The Australian missed out on the chance to become only the fifth UFC champ-champ in his home country and now returns to take on interim featherweight titleholder Rodriguez.

Elsewhere on the stacked card, Brandon Moreno will defend his flyweight crown against Alexandre Pantoja while Robert Whittaker takes on Dricus du Plessis.

After attempting to become a double champion, Alexander Volkanovski returns to featherweight to defend his UFC featherweight title against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290 on July 8.

Part of International Fight Week, UFC 290 is inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN+ PPV in the U.S.

Joining the UFC in 2016, Volkanovski is undefeated in the promotion's featherweight division, beating the likes of Jose Aldo, Max Holloway, Brian Ortega, and The Korean Zombie. The Aussie lost to Islam Makhachev for lightweight gold, and while others saw weakness, he knows his skills will do the talking on fight night against Rodriguez.

Look, let's be honest, he probably does see holes in my game," Volkanovski told Yahoo. "I'm sure he's watching my fights, and he sees things he thinks he can capitalize on. That's how he should be thinking, and talking. But look: trying to capitalize on them and take advantage of them while I'm in front of him doing my thing is a different story.

Rodriguez is on a two-fight win streak, and has won five bouts via knockout. He beat Josh Emmett in February for the interim featherweight belt in a statement win.

The co-main event will see Brandon Moreno defend the UFC flyweight title against Alexandre Pantoja. Completing a tetralogy against Deiveson Figueiredo, Moreno, who once got cut by the UFC in 2018, is the promotion's first champion from Mexico.

Two titles will be on the line at UFC 290 this weekend, as Alexander Volkanovski and Brandon Moreno defend their gold against formidable opponents.

In the main event, Volkanovski defends his featherweight title against interim champion Yair Rodriguez, who will try to become the first fighter to beat the Australian at 145lbs. In February, Rodriguez submitted Josh Emmett to win the interim featherweight title, moments before Volkanovski challenged Islam Makhachev for the lightweight belt and came up narrowly short. That was just the second loss of Volkanovski’s career, with the 34-year-old’s only previous defeat having occurred 10 years ago – and at welterweight.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez’s victory over Emmett made him just the second Mexican champion in UFC history. His title win was followed by Alexa Grasso’s triumph in March, while Moreno preceded the pair as the first Mexican fighter to claim gold in the promotion.

And Moreno will be in action again this weekend, defending his flyweight title against a foe who has beaten him twice: Alexandre Pantoja. Moreno has improved significantly since those losses in 2016 and 2018, but this co-main event marks a difficult defence to kickstart his second reign as champion.
